Today is May 1st - this is a holiday here in Russia. We have heard that there were to be parades and interesting things to do today. But with the language barrier and all, we had no idea where these events were to take place. So we went down to Red Square. First clue we had no idea where to go - the Metro we took was very lightly traveled. There were not that many people using it. We got out at Red Square, well outside of it, right in front of the Bolshi Theater next to Trinity Gate. Anyway - we were "welcomed" by MANY MANY Russian police and army. Every where we looked you would see at least 30. I am not kidding. Where we came out we were more or less corralled into a small area and it was difficult to maneuver when you don't understand the officer with the bull horn. Tons of people waving the old communist flag. There was a stage with someone singing and lots of loud talking. Did I mention that there were a lot of police there?
Long story short we could not get on to Red Square from where we were and well I was extremely uncomfortable (thanks to the little run in with the Russian police the 2nd day we were here). So we left. We went back to the beloved Arbat area and walked around there.
This morning after another fun night of watching and praying over one of the electrical outlets I called our apartment "manager". She said that they would send someone Saturday. I mentioned the word fire and that changed to someone coming out today after 7pm. So sweet "U" came and her wise words of wisdom. "Don't use that one." Pointing to the problem outlet. Then she said that they would "send the master to come on Saturday". All I could think about was how I wish my dad was here with some electrical tape. He always makes things better with electrical tape. Anyway, of course it did not spark, crackle, or pop while "U" was here. But, I am very appreciating that she came here on a holiday. Now at least we can have the laptop plugged up in the kitchen and watch satellite TV in the living room – yes, that's right we could not do that before today. One or the other - not both. I had no idea that the battery of a laptop could die so quickly!
No rain today. Maybe tomorrow? We hope not. We do not have any major plans tomorrow. Technically it is a holiday too. Did I mention that Dave has found his "tech fix" here? Yeah, and its right beside the grocery store so I get food and he gets his geek fix - so its not Best Buy, but has things that plug in.
